Sylvia Wynters sat on the edge of the curb in disbelief. She knew today was supposed to be a big event but would not have believed it if someone told her how big. She was meant to make a report for the NAU Daily Hermes on the Arts and Science Expo that the school was to host that day, but someone had other plans. Right after the school president had finished speaking to the event attendees, the well-known criminal group The Ouroboros crashed the party. No one knew for sure what they wanted, but they took control of the main hall and held the collective of people hostage.
A man and woman ran up to where she was sitting, both with worried expressions on their faces.
“Sylvia! There you are!” said the woman. “We have been trying to reach you for the last several hours!”
Sylvia looked up from her pondering and saw her parents, Josiah and Rhianna.
“Oh! Hi, yeah, I’m here,” she said. “Still in one piece in spite of the armed criminals.”
“Armed criminals? What happened here?” asked Josiah.
“Well, I could have died I suppose, but no big deal!” chirped Sylvia.
“Don’t joke about that! This is serious, you were in danger!” said Rhianna.
Sylvia sobered for a brief moment.
“Someone did actually…”
There was an awkward silence as her parents embraced her together.
“Well, we are glad you’re safe now. Let’s get you home.”
“The authorities already asked me their questions, so I can leave,” Sylvia said.
The family moved through the crowds of people as other friends and family were reunited after the harrowing events of the day to a silver pickup parked on the edge of the lawn with many other vehicles.
“They took the drone that Jack built though, so I will have to get that back when they’re done with it,” stated Sylvia as she buckled up in the seat.
“If they even give it back…” remarked her dad.
“Jack is not going to be happy… again…” Sylvia said.
“So again, what actually happened?” asked her dad.
“Well, the Ouroboros came in with their guns, which people were talking and said they think were stolen. Then there was a guy that is a student who made this high-tech off-switch, that I actually helped grab a piece for, that turned off all of the guns so we could escape. But then, they got their guns back and took some people hostage again. And then the same guy and some other friend of his I think went back inside and somehow took them all down with supposedly no weapons themselves. Then the police finally went in after the fact to clean up and then arrested the bad guys and talked to everyone and now here we are.”
Her parents looked at each other in astonishment.
“So wait… what happened?”
Sylvia looked out the window.
“I can’t believe it even happened!”
“I think you are glazing over some important details there…” said her mother. “Never mind that it sounds somewhat embellished at the same time.”
Sylvia turned quickly.
“But they did happen and now I am wondering what is going to happen next!” she exclaimed. “Or wait… who are those guys that even were able to get back inside?”
“What are you talking about?” asked her father. “Are you sure that they weren’t just special agents or something? Like part of a special security force?”
“As students?” Sylvia questioned. “That doesn’t sound right… they were younger and not too much older or even the same age as I am!”
Rhianna let out a sigh.
“We will just have to wait and see what the investigations turn up with I suppose…” she said. “Meanwhile, I think you need to take a break from this school for a bit.”
Sylvia frowned.
“NO! I need to go back to finish my report for the Hermes!” she said. “I want to sort out this story!” “While this may be a first-time incident here at NAU, who knows if it is the last?” noted her dad.
“They are putting a hold on classes anyway for the next week while the investigation is happening,” said Sylvia. “At least they said as much when they questioned me.”
“Well that is all and well, but maybe you need to think about this…” said Josiah with a serious tone.
Sylvia looked out the window again, watching the pinnacle of the NAU hall disappear in the side mirror of the truck.
“Oh, I am thinking about this all right…” she said to herself. "There has to be something more going on… I just have to figure it out…"
