Noel sat nervously in the farthest corner booth at The Brewer's Café, her eyes fixated on the door. Just a day ago, Sylvia Wynters had messaged her, requesting an interview with her for the N.A.U. newsletter, Daily Hermes.
Reluctantly, Noel had agreed.
She was usually the most talkative person among her friends, always ready to share a story. But now, her nerves were getting the best of her. Considering what she had just gone through, she figured most other people would feel the same.
When she had called the police a few nights ago, they were hesitant to believe her. Only her desperate pleas for help had prompted any response. By the time they arrived, the two mysterious individuals who had come to her aid had vanished. A citizen in trouble wasn't an unusual occurrence, but the nature of her distress was entirely unique. Not everyone gets attacked by monsters, let alone have what seemed to have been covert operatives intervene.
As Noel continued to lose herself in her thoughts, an auburn-haired woman came into view. It took her a moment to realize that the woman was Sylvia, the self-made journalist.
Sylvia walked up to her booth, smiling.
"Noel, right?"
"Oh, yes, that's me," Noel responded.
"Thank you so much for agreeing to this,” Sylvia said.
“Your story is going to be quite a sensation for the school news."
Sylvia set a recording device on the table between them.
"Is it okay if I record our conversation for note-taking purposes?"
"Sure…"
"Great, let's begin."
She activated the recording device, and her tablet was poised for note-taking.
Sylvia took a breath and then began:
"So, I'm here with Noel Benoit, a fellow student at N.A.U. She has an incredible story to share. Can you tell me what happened to you four days ago?"
Noel recounted the night's events: how she was walking home from work when an eerie sound emanated from between the buildings. Her curiosity got the better of her, and she ventured closer, only to come face to face with nightmarish creatures, resembling distorted versions of mythological beings. She mentioned her boyfriend's comments about them resembling Cerberus and the Minotaur.
"The three-headed dog guarding the entrance to the underworld,” commented Sylvia. “And the legendary monster of Crete, I presume."
"Yes, that's what he said,” Noel confirmed.
“Anyways, I was being chased by the three-headed dog, and I was sure it was going to catch me when these two individuals in black suits showed up."
Sylvia raised an eyebrow.
"Suits, like formal attire?"
"No, like armored suits of some kind, similar to military gear but all black."
"Interesting! Do you think they were part of a special unit?"
"I'm not sure. I didn't see any markings on their armor, and I couldn't place where they might be from. I was too focused on the monsters."
"Of course, that's understandable."
Noel paused a moment as Sylvia diligently typed notes on her tablet.
"There's something else that was strange," Noel added.
Sylvia looked up with curiosity.
"The one who approached me... I'm pretty sure they were both men from their voices, but... I think he somehow knew my name."
"That's interesting… Very interesting…"
