Adam pushed his body as far as he could in an attempt to catch up with the mysterious person. He was used to the chase, the rush of adrenaline as he had chased quite a few runaway criminals in his short career as a vigilante.
This person was a decent sprinter, but Adam felt that he was gaining ground.
Just as he turned a corner, he caught a blur of motion in his peripheral just in time to dodge a blunt object aimed at his face.
He had to make a split-second decision: continue his chase and possibly get attacked from behind or turn towards this new assailant.
He chose to run and hope this person's aim was just as bad the second time.
“Where d'ya think you're goin’?” called out an angry Scottish voice.
“Oh boy…” Adam hissed under his breath as he glanced back to see a hulking figure charging after him.
“Sorry pal! Kind of busy tonight! I'm free on Thursday if you want to schedule something!” Adam called over his shoulder as he urged his legs to carry him farther away from his pursuer.
“SHIELD! I've got a new problem over here!” Adam said into the comm line.
“What's your current situation?”
There was a brief silence on the line, and then Lance finally replied.
“I'm sort of busy trying to lose the police before they get their backup over here…” he said.
“What's happening over there?”
“Not too much, I just might have a large angry leprechaun chasing me…” Adam responded.
“Whut's that? I be SCOTTISH, not IRISH!” shouted the man behind him.
“Oops… my mistake!” Adam said.
“Did you catch the original target?” Lance asked.
“No… I was delayed slightly by this other guy trying to get my face acquainted with a metal club…” Adam stated.
“And I don't mean the kind that has a mosh pit…”
“Switch targets,” Lance stated.
“This other guy may be involved.”
“Roger that….” Adam huffed.
He kicked off of a wall and changed directions to face down the man behind him. The man's bulk continued charging toward him and it was all Adam could do to avoid being tackled by him. He dodged the man's club again then took up a defensive stance a few paces away.
“Shield, just gonna confirm now that this guy is very probably very much involved…”
“How can you tell?”
Adam looked again at the man's garb which included a black vest with a playing card-styled club icon across his chest.
“I've got a pretty big hunch that he is,” Adam replied.
“Oh, you'll be lucky if ya just have a hunch when I'm through with ya!” the man taunted.
Adam knocked the knuckles of his new reinforced bracers together.
“Guess I'll have to send my chiropractor bill to you then,” he said with a laugh.
“Who should I address it to? Mr. Scotty MacDonald?”
“Ooh… you really might want to be careful with those sorts of comments, he gets really quite touchy about his heritage,” said a woman behind him.
Adam spun around right as a kick connected with his chest and knocked him back. Adam recovered from the blow and moved to avoid a follow-up attack but found himself in a tight bear hug from the huge Scotsman. Adam struggled against the man but to no avail. He looked back to see a short Asian woman in black and red garb casually watching him struggle.
“Don't mind him though, he's nice to have around once you get to know him,” said the woman as she smiled deviously at Adam.
“I take it you're both a part of some gimmick group?” Adam asked as he noted the red heart on the woman's jacket and face.
“Isn't the theme a bit oversaturated?”
The woman feigned a pout.
“Now, why would you have to say something like that? You might give the King of Clubs here the impression that you don't like our group….” she said as she gestured to the man.
The man tightened his hold on Adam in response, squeezing a bit of his captive’s breath out.
“And let me guess…” continued Adam, struggling slightly.
“You must be the Queen of Hearts or something?”
“How smart of you,” she said mockingly as she patted the side of his helmet.
“Now, normally we would make this a longer meet and greet, but unfortunately we have important business matters to attend to…”
She stepped back and nodded to her companion. He walked up to a nearby garbage receptacle and promptly deposited Adam inside. Before Adam could resist, it was blocked in a way that he couldn't simply open it to escape.
“Ugh… this is not pleasant…” Adam groaned to himself as he listened to his assailants depart with devious laughter in their wake.
“Shield….”
“Yes?”
“I know you're probably still busy and all, but could you…”
He was cut off when the receptacle suddenly flipped over and he tumbled out, right next to Lance.
“Thanks…” Adam said as he got up to his feet.
“How did you give those officers the slip?”
Lance took a quick look over his shoulder at the lights now flashing at the end of the alley.
“I didn't apparently,” he said with a sigh.
“Let's go.”
