“I was wondering when you two would come around,” said Lance as the friends all grouped together.
“So, what do you guys have for us today?” inquired Noel.
“Actually, I was just about to ask the same thing myself,” noted Lance as he looked at Adam. “I have seen you working on it, but never asked what you actually made.”
“Well, aren’t all of you in for a treat!” said Adam with a smile. “Although not so much a literal one as that delectable cappuccino L.A.S.S.I. made!”
Scott looked over at Lance’s table with its various flat screens and then back to Adam’s hi-tech hologram.
“I don’t know,” he said. “Isn’t Lance usually the one with the fancy tech gimmicks? It seems you upped the game on your end.”
Lance shrugged in response.
“I have a bigger set-up with a smaller budget in mind and pocket,” he stated.
“So... what is that stuff?” asked Noel as she pointed at Adam’s vial of gel.
Adam grinned. “I’ll try to give the short version for now,” he said.
“Yeah, we all know how you like to keep talking when you get excited,” noted Scott with a light punch to Adam’s shoulder.
“Now, now…” started Adam. “Anyways, this might not look like much, but this could be the future of forensics!”
He held up the thin glass.
“I give you: BioBots!”
Noel peered closer.
“It looks like something Lance would use to style his hair,” she said.
Everyone laughed briefly at the thought, then Adam continued.
“Ah, but that is merely the carrier gel that you can see with the naked eye!” Adam said as he pointed at the glass.
He opened an app on his tablet to a presentation showing round cartoon-esque robots on the title slide.
“Is THAT what they look like?” asked Noel naively, but seriously.
“No, much cooler than that!” replied Adam with a chuckle.
He swiped his finger over the tablet and it transitioned to a diagram of a heavily detailed orb.
“That’s what they look like.”
“Are you for real?” questioned Noel incredulously.
“Wait! Are those nanobots?!” exclaimed Scott excitedly as he pressed closer to the screen.
Lance and Adam both laughed. Scott and Noel never failed to have varying reactions to everything, especially when it came to something incredibly nerdy. Noel would be skeptical, while Scott would be excited like a little kid given full reign of a toy store.
Still amused, Adam answered Scott’s inquiry.
“Hahaha! Yes, they most certainly are.”
He had barely finished his response when he was hit with a barrage of questions from Scott:
“How’d you make them?”
“What do they do?”
“What did you use for the carrier gel?”
“Are…”
He stopped abruptly as he saw three smirks facing him. He paused a moment to catch his breath, shook his shoulders to shed the boyish excitement, and smirked back at them as a sign that he had regained his composure.
“Okay, so I’m a little excited, but can you blame me? This is incredible! Lance is always building cool stuff and now Adam’s… whatever-they-do-nanobots… and not to mention the hype that has been built up surrounding this Science Fair that we have been looking forward to all semester... it is just super exciting and… a little overwhelming! Hahaha! So, Adam, what do these awesome machines do?”
Adam took a breath to prepare himself to give his much-rehearsed informational speech.
“Before I begin, let me ask all of you a question. In terms of criminal justice, what would you say is the most crucial part of solving a case? If you said evidence, then you are absolutely correct. Evidence is key to figuring out the unknown. However, sometimes, that evidence can be much harder to find. It’s as if you need something to analyze the crime scene from a perspective that a human investigator can’t. That is why I have created a tool that can help with such a need.”
To demonstrate his statement, he tapped the screen with the picture of the robot to start a slideshow. Soon the hologram was active with a heavily detailed presentation illustrating the dimensions and specifics of his nanobots. Smiling at how fluid things were progressing, he turned back to face his friends to continue his practice lecture as they stared at the hologram with raised eyebrows.
“BioBots are organic based nanomachines programmed to perform complex data analyses at a crime scene, then transmit the data in real time to the crime laboratory. These microscopic robots can analyze everything from disturbances in dust particles to minute traces of blood. The unique feature about these nanobots is their disposal mechanism.”
“As I have stated before, they are constructed using organic compounds and materials that allow them to work in the environment they have been released in without altering that environment. This means that once they have concluded analyzing every square inch of the area they have been programmed to cover, they can be remotely deactivated using a killswitch that has been intricately embedded throughout the hardware of the device and will permanently disable all transmissions. Upon completion of their decommissioning, the leftover pieces will harmlessly dissipate into the atmosphere and landscape to return to their natural origins.”
“The gel-like substance will be released via aerosol through a special canister linked to the Law Enforcement Officer's smart device. From the investigator's device, he can activate the "brains", which are actually biologically conceived computer chips, by uploading satellite intel into these chips. This intel would include location, proximity of said location, nearest lab to transmit data to, etc. Once all this information has been uploaded, the gel will start charging the bots, the former actually being a hydrogel that holds an amazing electric charge. The canister will give off a blue glow signaling the upload complete, then the bots are ready to be released into the air to conduct their work."
“So…. what do you guys think?” queried Adam to finish his presentation.
“This is all pretty amazing stuff, Adam!” concluded Scott with a slap on his friend’s back.
“It truly is,” agreed Lance. “I’m even impressed.”
Adam performed a slight bow to the praise he was receiving.
“Thanks,” he said. “I can’t tell you how much time I spent preparing and studying this well ahead of time just to even prepare for it.”
“Well, it all definitely paid off!” stated Noel. “I’m sure your brother would find these things to be useful.”
“Hey, I just remembered something else I needed to grab from my truck,” announced Lance. “I’ll be back in a bit.”
“Okay,” said Noel. “See you in a bit then.”
Lance pocketed the console to L.A.S.S.I. and headed back the way he and Adam had entered the hall.
“We are actually going to look around a bit before the meeting,” said Scott to Adam.
“All right,” Adam replied. “Just in case we don’t see you until later, are you guys still coming to the café tonight?”
“Of course,” stated Noel. “I wouldn’t miss those pastries for the world!” she added with a grin of anticipation.
“Alrighty then!” laughed Adam.
